The arched cross is Cholla which is a cactus plant native to the desert southwest and its main characteristic is that the dried trunk skeleton is full of holes. The Christ image is patterned after one of the figures in the petroglyphs. As He hangs on the crude cactus cross, Christ holds the captured, defeated serpent, symbolizing that Christ’s death and Resurrection defeated Satan.
I have been studying some petroglyphs painted hundreds if not thousands of years ago by indigenous artists on some cliffs in Utah. These primitive but expressive images have influenced this Crucifixion painting.

The labyrinth/spiral motif is incorporated here, to symbolize life. It is a common symbol used in art through history and prehistory.
The painting is 24”x24” and is acrylic painted on 120-year-old, hand written, Texas deeds that conveyed land once controlled by indigenous people.
